Books I’ve Edited

Debbie Burke: Editing supervisor

After working at a publishing company in Texas, I continued my correspondence with my supervising editor, Debbie Burke and edited her jazz novel, Tasty Jazz Jams for our Times. She wrote,

“Calen not only has an eagle eye and a great intuitive sense about the use of language; he also has an infectious enthusiasm, a can-do attitude and an eagerness to learn everything he can about publishing. I would highly recommend him for any position he is seeking in the industry as he would be a strong and valuable asset.”

Jon Smith, Author of Safire

Safire was a wonderful book about love and loss. It reminded me of the stories I read growing up and kept me hooked until the end. This was one of the first books I edited.

“Calen Nakash did a very good job on Safire. I was impressed by [his editing and suggestions]. I would work with this editor again and highly recommend him to anyone!

Before sending my manuscript to Calen, it had been sent through Grammarly and [edited by me]. He was able to find things I had missed, as well as [spellings Grammarly should have picked up on.]

So your Plant Sucks was my first foray into the editing world, and taught me a lot about both plant management and what I’d be working with. Casey was nothing but kind to me and I completed this book in around two weeks.

“Calen is a first-rate editor who can take complicated subjects, quickly learn the details, and provide valuable feedback to authors. He edited my book, So Your Plant Sucks about rescuing failing manufacturing plants while employing Six Sigma and Lean tools - not easy topics, but he helped me polish the book to become better than it could otherwise have been.  I would highly recommend his skills.”

Bryan Porter

The Parable of the Knocker was so narratively impressive that I didn’t realize it covered real events until after I’d finished it. The book was thoughtful to the victims, realistic in its depiction of the courtroom and a joy to uncover.

“Calen is an amazing editor! He helped me by completing a comprehensive edit on my debut non-fiction book, The Parable of the Knocker. Calen was extremely thorough and detailed-oriented. I truly appreciated his suggestions on word use, spelling, and grammar. Calen is able to bring a writer's insight to the editing process and is interested in helping an author reach his or her intended audience through selective edits with regard to grammar and word choice.

One of Calen's most impressive qualities is his understanding that the editing process should not result in significant changes to the author's voice or thematic structure. Calen exhibits a real commitment to the art of story-telling, which is the result of his multi-faceted and impressive resume. I [cannot more] highly recommend Calen. In addition to being an outstanding editor, he is also a wonderful personality."
